Lou Reed, Transformer
Embroidery stitched directly through a vinyl record sleeve.
12x12x2 inches, framed in acrylic.
After leading the Velvet Underground, Lou Reed embarked on a solo career. The second solo album was released in 1972 and highlighted the popular glam rock genre. Transformer contains his biggest hit, “Walk on the Wild Side”. The album was produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson. Consequently, it is on many lists as one of the top 100 albums of all time. Since this is a glam rock album I wanted to incorporate that into the design. The first step is stitching Reed’s expression in white thread. Then black and gold glitter appliqué is laser cut to expose his face. I then embroidered the lettering on top of the fabric as well as the detail of the guitar. When the light hits the fabric this album truly is glam.
