Elton John, Madman Across the Water
Embroidery stitched directly through a vinyl record sleeve.
12x12x2 inches, framed in acrylic.
Madman Across the Water was one of the prototypes for the album series. It is the only album I can think of that features embroidery on the cover. The cover is a photograph of a hand embroidered patch on a denim jacket. I can tell that it was hand embroidered by the way the ombré forms and the irregular length of the stitching. I wanted to duplicate exactly the colors, gradient and stitch lengths for my version of the album. After quite a bit of trial and error I was able to create a pattern that resembles the hand embroidery and recreate the album cover. This was a very meta project of a photograph of embroidery, photographed and then embroidered.
